Title:  Sizing Up

Summary:  John's got a little something for Mary.  Problem is, it's not so little.
A/N:  Belated Christmas ficlet for starhawk2005, who wanted "John/Mary, smut optional".  I failed at the smut, but I hope you like it anyway. *g*


Sizing Up

"It's huge!" The expression on Mary's face was a mixture of awe and fear.

"Told'ja," John responded with a wink and a grin.  He was very proud to have surpassed Mary's expectations.  "Think you can handle it?"

"Ummm..."

The smile slowly slipped from John's face as Mary stared and stared and bit her lip – not in joyful anticipation, however – and this was definitely not what he'd expected their first time doing this together. 

"Don't you...like it?"  He cringed at the near desperation in his voice.

"Oh, oh, honey!  No!  I mean, yes!  Of course I like it."  She took a step closer, wanting to comfort her new husband, but she didn't quite close the distance.  "It's just that, well..."  She was biting her lip so hard now John was worried she'd end up drawing blood.

"What?!" He finally asked in exasperation.

"I don't see how it's going to fit!  It's HUGE, John.  And even if you did manage to get it in, then what?"

"What do you mean 'then what?'  Isn't that sort of obvious?"

"To you maybe, but I'm not as big as you are."

"What the hell–"  John shut up, took a deep breath, and lowered his voice.  "Mary, what does size have to do with anything?  I mean, it's beautiful.  Just like you are.  And I want you to have the best."
Mary stopped biting her lip, smiled, and laughed.  "You sweet-talker you. All right, we'll make it work somehow.  But I'm gonna need a ladder, you know."

"Oh, I don't know about that.  I can help you with the hard to reach spots."

"Nope, sorry.  I realize this may be our first Christmas together, but I want to be the one to put the star on top of our very first tree."

And of course, John could see no reason to deny Mary anything.
